Gráinne Whelehan
I completed my PhD in 2023 in the Nutritional Physiology Research Group at the University of Exeter, using complex mechanistic techniques to explore the role of nutrition in improving glycaemic control across a spectrum of glucose tolerance (i.e., from healthy adults to those with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes). I am fascinated by the heterogeneity underpinning the development of type 2 diabetes, and how the quantitative thresholds that define diabetes progression and diagnosis can mask a wide range of distinct metabolic abnormalities. Joining the LDC has allowed me to examine this heterogeneity through the lens of ethnicity, working closely with Prof. Louise Goff to explore how ethnicity influences diabetes development.
