I completed a BSc in Applied Sports Science in 2004, an MSc in 2005 and part-time PhD in 2010 in Physical Activity and Health, all from Loughborough University. Alongside my PhD I worked as a Research Associate from 2005-2010 at Loughborough University where I specialised in the evaluation of physical activity initiatives in young people. Following this I moved into the area of diabetes prevention and worked in the Leicester Lifestyle and Health Research group from 2010-2013, on several large randomised controlled trials focused on increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour in people with a high risk of type 2 diabetes. In 2013 I was appointed Lecturer, and subsequently Associate Professor in 2016 and Professor in 2023, in Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour and Health, University of Leicester.
