SIT and be FIT Study

In order to help heal a diabetic foot ulcer, doctors advise patients to stay off their feet as much as possible, making participation in traditional forms of exercise such as walking and jogging difficult, with restful sitting often deemed the only option. Keeping diabetic foot ulcer patients physically active while remaining off their feet is an area of research that is yet to be explored. The primary objective is to investigate whether 12 weeks of arm ergometry training can improve cardio-respiratory fitness in DFU patients.

The study is looking for individuals aged 18 years and older who are currently receiving, or have received in the previous twelve months treatment for a diabetic foot ulcer.

As part of the study individuals will attend a 'baseline' assessment visit and then be randomly allocated into one of two groups:

  • Standard Care Control group

  • Exercise Intervention group

Following this a 'Follow-up' assessment visit will take place.
